Hair Power

Natural hair is something to be appreciated. Something to be celebrated. But society doesn’t see it that way, especially for black women. Kinks, curls, and coils are ways often used to describe our beautiful natural hair. Our hair types typically range from 4a to 4c. Though we are limited, we are definitely diverse.

Society deems our natural hair as “unkempt” and “unattractive,” especially in the workplace. It’s truly unfortunate because this causes black women who embrace their natural hair to question their decision. I’ll admit, there have been times where I’ve tried to be cautious about my own hair when attending any business-type or formal events so that I don’t appear unprofessional. But the truth is that it is not our hair that is the issue; it’s the views of those who are “offended.” My hair being in its natural state does not disrupt the peace nor does it cause a distraction. If everyone else can wear their "natural hair," then why can't we?

This is obviously about more than hair. Those who embrace their natural coils are scary to the oppressor. They’re afraid of the power that we hold when we start to truly love ourselves despite all the years of being treated as less than a person. They’re afraid that when we start to recognize our worth, we’ll rebel and want revenge. But take it from a fellow sista, the best revenge is to love yourself and those beautiful natural curls! Loving ourselves equates to not letting anyone bring us down because we know who we are and the value we hold. Don't ever let anyone strip you of your self-worth!

If you're thinking about going natural, I think you should just do it! Doing it is the scariest part, but once you get past it you'll wonder why you were ever afraid. Get to know your hair and yourself!

How do you embrace your natural hair?
