Summer as a College Student
As you grow older, you realize that you're summers are no longer spent doing nothing or vacationing 24/7. When you become a college student, you begin to put things into perspective as you are expected to plan out your future. With these expectations, the summer doesn't seem anywhere near long enough to achieve what you may want or need to before the fall semester of school starts. Here's what summer as a college student may consist of:
Work
Most college students spend their summer working to try to make as much money as possible. This money may go toward a number of things: books and/or school supplies, personal items, or savings for the future among other things. Either way, it's important that students rack up as much money as possible during their 3 month break from school.
Summer classes
Some college students take summer courses in order to get ahead or make sure they can graduate on time. The average student may take about 1 or 2 courses during the summer. Imagine juggling this with working and trying to enjoy the summer. It's not so fun once you put yourself in that situation, but it will pay off in the long run.
Financial Aid
I understand that most applications for scholarships and grants are due early in the year, but during the summer you can still look into scholarships and grants to apply for when the time rolls around again. There are also scholarships that you can apply for in the summer. You have more time to prepare for upcoming deadlines and to deal with your financial situation for the upcoming school year.
Internships
Internships are a great way for college students to get experience with jobs and they may even get to keep the job after their graduation. They may or may not get paid, but most college students opt for paid internships. If you want an internship, it is important to seek them early, as in around the January- February mark. They are great for your resume and give you experience in the career field you are considering going into.
Summer as a college student will not be what you're used to especially if it's your first. While you may have to do some of the things listed above, don't forget to actually take a break and enjoy the summer.
What are some things you did during the summers before you became a college student versus what you do now as a college student?
